An Increase in Online Courses and Degrees

The flexibility of online education allows students of all ages to pursue a degree or certificate at their pace. In 2011, over six million students were reported to have taken at least one course of study online. Online schooling allows professionals to accomplish their educational goals while continuing their career. Students have the option of going to school full-time or part-time and take as many courses as their own schedule will allow. In addition, students in an online degree program can save time and money by completing courses at home instead of traveling to and from traditional classes.

A survey conducted at the end of 2010 among community college students reported that 61 percent of students took online courses. Time restraints made dropping out of school more likely for older individuals, those with full-time employment and married individuals. In addition, students with one or more children would often find full-time schooling difficult to balance with their everyday activities. Only 15 percent of those surveyed reported that they dropped out or considered dropping out during the first semester due to the inability to balance home life, work and school successfully.

More students are choosing online courses and obtaining their degrees from schools that offer courses completely online due to affordable tuition rates. Online schools typically charges thousands less than traditional campus-based schools. Most online colleges also offer the same type of financial aid that traditional colleges offer including grants, loans and scholarships.

Another reason that online schooling has become a great option for many students is the choices that are available to them. Students are no longer forced to pick a major or degree program that they really don’t want based on what the colleges in their area has to offer. Individuals can now choose from many different schools that offer a wide variety of programs.

Online schooling may also help students perform better than their peers attending traditional schools according to the Department of Education. An online learning environment allows students to connect from all over the nation and can encourage students to build a network of peers with different learning experiences. Online students have the ability to interact with their instructors and other students on a one-on-one basis and many online courses require students to interact with each other throughout the course. While many traditional classes use lecture as a learning tool, online programs often encourage discussion among students along with the instructor.
